In this column, we will show you the importance of having a leader in a team at padel. We will tackle the subject of whether there should already be one. Then, find out what are the qualities required to be one. Finally, we will finish by describing the different types of leader.

What is a leader?

We must first determine the concept of leader. A leader can be defined by "lthe process by which a person influences individuals or groups towards established goals ". (Barrow 1977).

In the field of sport, and the work environment, the dimensions of leadership include:

The decision process, motivation techniques, interpersonal relationships, and group or team management.

Types of leader in sport

Normally, the role of leader of the pair falls on the player who plays the better of the two, but this facet would only define a type of leadership, which one could qualify as technical leadership. However, this is not the only type of leadership that exists. In team sport, we can distinguish three types of leaders:

Technical Leader:

The technical manager of a pair of padel would be the one who has the best technical qualities, and knows how to develop them perfectly during competitions. This type of leader usually plays on the left side (if they are right handed), and carries the weight of the game by playing important balls with determination, and confidence.

Carolina Navarro would be a good example.

Tactical Leader:

Tactical leaders are the ones who carry the weight of the game strategy to adopt. Players who know best how to read the opponent's game, and who generally give ideas or game plans to develop, are the main characteristics of such a leader.

They are generally quieter players on the field because they handle games in a less emotional and tactical way and tend to play a much bigger role in field changes than their teammates.

Juan Martin Diaz is a good example.

Emotional Leader:

Such a leader would be one who carries the psychological weight of the pair. It is the player who encourages the most, who pulls the partner when he perceives that he needs it. These are usually players who use their emotions to positively influence their partner.

The best example would be Fernando Belasteguin.

Am I a technical, tactical and / or emotional leader?
