Alex Corretja is now deputy to the presidency of the World Padel Tour. The former tennis world No. 2 speaks to Trademarks of the new WPT which will be “revolutionary".

I can understand players

Question: What is Alex Corretja, a tennis player, doing now in the padel ?

Alex Corretja:I am engaged in an exciting challenge: to make the World Padel Tour remains the best circuit in the world. I am XNUMX percent involved and we are working very, very hard to present a new World Padel Tour in the coming weeks. It's going to be revolutionary, innovative and different, in terms of technology, player service, tournament growth. It's exciting to do this in the fastest growing sport in history.”

Question : What are your duties and how did they convince you to sign?

Alex Corretja:I have always had a friendly relationship with the World Padel Tour. They saw that I could understand the players in this situation [the competition with Premier Padel] because I was a professional player. There was a meeting to express it to me and above all, so that when presenting a new project, to explain that it is very good for everyone.”

You have to take the professionalism of tennis

Question: How did the players accept you?

Alex Corretja:Very good and I'm very grateful. They know that I understand them, that we are a circuit that has worked very hard for 10 years to develop the padel. I think thanks to the WPT and the players, we are where we are today. We continue to work so that very soon we can present the proposal for a new World Padel Tour. I think we are the best today and we want to continue to be.

Question: The padel there is something to learn from tennis?

Alex Corretja:"From tennis, you have to take professionalism, the relationship with the public, the brands... The biggest difference between the padel and tennis is that everything was very centralized in Spain, whereas now, thanks to the World Padel Tour, the sport is growing exponentially around the world. I think players are aware that they have a huge chance to become global stars and find more markets. the padel can be proud of this progress in such a short time."

A revolution on the WPT

Question: Can you give us an idea of what the new WPT will be like?

Alex Corretja:"The prize-money will change radically, which demonstrates the commitment of the World Padel Tour towards its male and female circuits. We are also working on technology and sites. And also in player service, paying attention to things that have been communicated to us and that need to be improved. I sincerely believe that competition is good because it makes you grow and motivates you to improve. What is to come is revolutionary. The public will notice it, but I'm sure the players will notice it the most. We are already a super-circuit, but if we want to be the best, we have to be excellent, not just good.

Distance in relations with players

Question: And how is the atmosphere between the WPT and the players?

Alex Corretja:"There is no doubt that there is a distance. But I hope we can present a new project, a new World Padel Tour and grow together. It would be a surprise to me if they didn't accept it. If I was the big brother of the players and they came to me with the offer we are going to present to them, I would have no doubts. Moreover, if this had happened when I ended my career, I would have continued in the padel. I absolutely want this circuit to continue to be a leader and the players to continue to be successful. We want them to feel that we are the best circuit.
