Javier Garrido becomes a key player in padel international. The Andalusian evokes for Padel Magazine his relationship with Fede Chingotto, his racket Starvie, and the very physically demanding season.

The Triton Pro, a very powerful racquet

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: We are at the stand of StarVie with your pala, the Triton Pro. Will you play with the same racquet next season?

Javier Garrido:“Next season I will play with the Triton again, but I think the design will change a bit. This is my third season with this model and I'm very happy with it. At first, what I liked the most with this racquet was that the handle was longer, and like before, I was doing backhands with both hands… But I don't know how to do that anymore! But it's very comfortable because I have a big hand. Then obviously it's a pala that offers great power, and that helps me in my game. And I also like the fact that the surface is very rough.”

Take it up a notch with Chingotto

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: This season is very special, and there have been many pair changes. How are things going with Fede Chingotto?

Javier Garrido :"Very well ! We also had a big game here in Mexico. It was a pair change that happened because there was a move in the pairs from above. I was lucky to get a call from Fede. I was playing well with Campagnolo, but I felt that with Chingotto I could take it up a notch. Unfortunately we cannot train because it is the 8th consecutive week of the tournament…”

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: What is the plan for next season? Continue both?

Javier Garrido:“Actually we haven't decided yet. There are still tournaments and we want to test ourselves. We will see what happens.”

A very long season

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: How to explain to a fan who discovers the padel that there are three circuits?

Javier Garrido:"It is complicated. It would be easier if there was only one circuit with all the players and the same ranking, that there were many tournaments that we could choose from. But that does not exist… I play on two circuits and it is very likely that it will happen again. For 2024, we will see what will happen. I would like us all to be able to play on the same circuit.

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: After such a hard season, how do you feel physically and mentally?

Javier Garrido:“Physically I'm doing very well. It's my greatest quality because I train and take care of myself for it. I knew the season would be long and that's why I started working on January 1st. Mentally, it is true that it is difficult at the end of the year. It's many weeks away from home, many hours being alone or in airports, planes..."

“People think you're lucky, and it's true that it's a privilege to live off padel, but it is very hard. There I would like to be with my parents, my family at home, or my friends, but I cannot because I am here playing. I love it too, but you have to know how to manage it because it's very hard.”

Don't eat too many tacos during the tournament!

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: We are in Mexico! How do you feel here?

Javier Garrido:"Very well ! I remember that I came to Mexico for the first time in 2015 during my first World Championships. I've always loved it. People are very nice and besides I love tacos, but you shouldn't eat too many during the tournament!”
