Brittany wakes up padel. Grégoire Jacob, Referent Padel of the Brittany league and Roshan Rochereau, Deputy Captain of the Breton team, reveal to us during the Interleague U14 2023 in Aix-en-Provence, the issues, challenges and ambitions of this discipline in a league where “everything remains to be done”.

“We arrive last, we finish in the top 8”

Roshan Rochereau – “The Brittany League is still young in the padel nationally. We currently do not have a Breton representative for the U18 Interligues, illustrating the fact that Brittany still needs to develop its offer. padel. "

Gregory Jacob – “The good news is that we arrived as the last league for these French championships, and not only did we secure a place in the top 8, but we also managed to overtake Ligue Nouvelle Aquitaine, who were top of the list. series n°4 of the competition.”

“We are starting the padel like our young people”

Gregory Jacob – “There is a lot of potential in Brittany. In these French Championships of padel U14, our team consisted of 9 players: 3 girls and 6 boys. Among them, only 2 were classified.”

Roshan Rochereau – “Against all expectations, we obtained excellent results, in particular thanks to the great cohesion of the team. It is this collective strength that allowed them to dominate much more experienced opponents and win unexpected matches. To contextualize, out of the 9 players, 5 started the padel only 2 months ago, and the others had not received a structured education in padel. "

“Results that will serve”

Gregory Jacob – “Such results will serve as a showcase for us to try to offer more offers of padel in Brittany, because there is currently a flagrant lack of structures dedicated to this sport. A dynamic team within Ligue Bretagne helps clubs develop rapidly in the padel and offers specific support.

To illustrate, in the Côtes-d'Armor, there are only two sites for 600 inhabitants. In Brittany, there are very few official teachers of padel, and Roshan is the first 100% teacher padel in Brittany with a federal Monitor diploma Padel (DFMP). To date, around 30 people hold the DFMP, but the Ligue de Bretagne does not yet offer the TFP, due to lack of demand.

Roshan Rochereau – “Currently, we have no competition or young players. However, schools in padel for young people are beginning to emerge in Rennes. I am convinced that this will help create a pool of young talent.”

“Schools for young people will hatch”

Gregory Jacob – “Municipal structures are essential for the education of young people, but they struggle to set up internal infrastructures. This is a major brake compared to the southern regions which can afford outdoor structures. Private structures undeniably contribute to the development of padel, but they are often reluctant to create schools of padel for young people due to financial constraints. However, the situation is changing, and private structures can now consider the development of such schools, as probably at the Garden or at Breizh Padel. "

Roshan Rochereau – “This kind of competition arouses desires, opportunities, and even vocations. As proof, let's take the example of young Thomas Cauve, 14, who, after only a few months of padel, is now inspired by the event and plans to engage more seriously in the padel to see how far it could take him.”
