Le padel French will witness a new pair this weekend: Julien Seurin and Dylan Guichard, two left-handers, decided to play P2000 from Carquefou together. An astonishing association: generally very coveted, left-handers normally have no trouble finding a right-hander to play alongside them. So why a Guichard / Seurin pair? The main stakeholders explain to us.

Two players who really like each other

Julien: “It’s definitely a little unusual, but it’s something Dylan and I have wanted to do for a while. We get along well and like challenges. The idea of two left-handers playing together is quite innovative in the padel. We wanted to see how it goes, if we can be competitive.”

Dylan : “To complement what Julien said, we really wanted to play together. We like each other a lot and we represent the same brand (Kuikma), so it makes sense in terms of visibility. It is also a small kiff staff to do something new in France. We want to be as competitive as possible. It’s true that we had constraints to train together, but we are motivated for this challenge.”

An adapted game strategy

Dylan : “As far as our strategy as left-handers is concerned, I must admit that we have not yet finalized everything. We plan to play a bit as if we were two right-handers. This means that the player on the right will try to take up as much space as possible. The real challenge, I think, will be for the player on the left to really leave the space necessary for the player on the right to make the difference. We’re going with our talent, and we’ll adapt as we go.”

Julien: “As Dylan mentioned, we’re going to improvise a little bit. The idea is that whichever of us plays on the left has to really disrupt the opposing player with effects that he is not used to. We want the player on the left to be very impactful, especially diagonally. The weak point is the defense on the left, so we will try to get to the net quickly to compensate.”

Who will play on the left?

Julien: “As for who of us will play on the left, that’s still under discussion. We tested both configurations during our training. Frankly, we will probably decide that at the end of the week, just before the tournament.

Dylan : “Yes, we haven’t decided on the position yet. We each have our strengths and weaknesses, and we try to see which configuration will maximize our collective potential. “It’s a bit of a leap into the unknown, but we’re up for the challenge.”

“Go for talent”

Dylan : “In terms of preparation and training, we encountered some logistical obstacles. We really wanted to train together to be at our best, but unfortunately our schedules didn't allow it. Julien was in Australia, and I was in Miami, so it wasn't practical. However, we do not let ourselves be discouraged. We plan to do a training session in Rennes on Friday evening, just before the P2000. We might be a little jetlagged, but we are super motivated.”

Julien: “Exactly, our preparation hasn’t been ideal, but we are determined to give the best of ourselves. We will probably have to adapt quickly during the tournament, but we are ready for that. We both have the experience and the ability to adjust in the moment, and that’s what we plan to do.”

“Show that a pair of lefties can be competitive”

Dylan : “For the P2000, our expectations are realistic but optimistic. We know that we have talent and that we can surprise some teams. The objective is to show that a pair of left-handers can be competitive and bring something new. We are aware of the challenges, but we are also excited at the idea of testing our dynamics in a real competition situation.”

Julien: “Yes, we are going there with the objective of being as competitive as possible. We haven't had the ideal training, but we both have competitive experience and a good understanding of the game. We just want to play our best game and see where it can take us. It’s an experience, but an experience that we take very seriously.”
