We see more and more players from padel use the two-handed lapel for a very simple reason: a large number of tennis players switch to the padel.

So is it really effective? When can we use it?

The vast majority of instructors will tell us that padel the backhand is done with one hand because the transfer of the weight of the body is much simpler and the majority of the shots will be cut, simpler with one hand therefore, especially for volleys.

However, as in all sports, everyone can have his own technique and his habits, even if they can be surprising for the opponents.

Today, on the professional circuit of padel (World Padel Tour), we have some examples among top players who play with two hands. Current 1 World Number Pablo Lima use it wonderfully, just like Juan Martin Diaz, one of the best players on the circuit.

To continue, here are the advantages and disadvantages of this shot.

Benefits

  • This is an effective shot to counter very high or powerful bullets, such as a smash, where it is easier to neutralize effects or power and make a more effective and controlled defense.
  • This shot makes it easier to hit balls with a lot of angles thanks to the flexion of the wrist to better direct the ball.
  • Use both can bring more power, especially if we play behind us (to avoid).

Drawbacks

  • This can create a doubt in our mind as to whether to play one or two hands and therefore make us make more mistakes.
  • The two-handed backhand involves more physical involvement and twisting of the body. This can promote injuries.
  • Short, two-handed flights are more complicated to perform than one hand.

We can see that there are therefore different advantages and disadvantages with a two handed backhand. We can still say that it is easier to perform a backhand with one hand for the rather specific strokes required by the padel.

On the other hand, it is possible to use both hands at certain times such as for example a counter on powerful opponent smash, or when it is necessary to find a very short cross zone for example.
