Last week, everything came together for a unforgettable tournament on the WPT: the Plaza Mayor of Valladolid, the bright sun and the public in effervescence! Despite the stifling heat, the event kept all its promises, offering spectators a memorable competition full of twists and surprises.

The “Coach Zorrus” gives us a recap of the tournament's strengths and weaknesses.

FLOPS:

  1. Momo Gonzalez and Sanyo Guttierez can't seem to find their rhythm: another quarter-final defeat, as disappointing in play as in attitude. How long will this situation continue?
  2. The Paquito / Chingotto and Ruiz / Tello pairs did not manage to go beyond the quarter-final stage. When will we witness the return of the Chingotto / Tello pair?
  3. The defeat of Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaría in the semi-finals is to be underlined: for the world numbers 1, it is a poor performance, especially after their impressive start to the season.

TOPS:

  1. The “youngsters” of the circuit Ustero and Alonso reached the quarter-finals of a Master while they were only qualifying. You will have to count on them very quickly!
  2. Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez confirm that they will be competitors to consider in 2023!
  3. The victory of Stupa and Di Nenno over the “invincibles”: what a match!

The finals movie

In the ladies, despite some major mistakes and a noticeable drop in speed from Delfi Brea, Marta Ortega and Gemma Triay had chances to win the final. However, several questions arise following the last tournaments: is Marta Ortega the weak link in the team? Is Gemma Triay as impactful as with Alejandra Salazar? Are the two players simply lacking team practice?

Among the men, after a first set dominated by Tapia and Coello, everything pointed to another victory for the “invincibles”. But the “grinta” of Stupa and Di Nenno made it possible to turn the tide. While we thought the match was folded 4/1 in the third set for Tapia and Coello, a discussion between Stupa and Di Nenno changed everything, setting fire to the powder. And 45 minutes later, the two Argentinians became the “masters” of Valladolid!
