It's the first huge sensation of this Greenweez Paris Major 2023 : the seeded 2 Franco Stupaczuk / Martin Di Nenno took the door in the 16th finals. His executioners are the Spaniards Jose Diestro and Javi Leal, who form pair No. 17 in this table. Perhaps helped by the oppressive heat which reigns at Porte d'Auteuil and favored Leal's devastating smashes, the outsiders bravely played their luck against the Superpibes lacking inspiration and success.

38% of our respondents believed in the surprise

The proof in the first set, during which the Spaniards won 60% of the points and delighted the service of the Argentines twice, without having any break point to defend. Diestro and Leal won 6/2, on a stunned Philippe-Chatrier court and – it is true – crushed by heat.

Our Instagram poll taken at the end of the first set shows that 38% of you believed at that moment in a surprise. Just before, the public had seen the victory Tapia and Coello acquired in extremis in three sets, after also losing the first set against the surprising Rodrigo and Ramirez.

While we expected a radical reaction from the Argentines, the debates were balanced in the second round, without them being able to make the hole. On the contrary, it was indeed Leal and Diestro who took the lead, taking the opposing service twice, on three occasions. Stupa and Di Nenno converted only one of their three break points, an insufficient record to get back into the match.

Three match points saved

Despite three match points saved at 5/4 against them, on Diestro's serve, Stupa commits a final fault on a volley from Leal, who can exult and extinguish his partner.

Clearly, the August break cut the pace for the world's top pairs. The defeat of Coello and Tapia last week in Finland against Ruiz / Bergamini and their very difficult victory this Wednesday (5/7 6/3 7/5) are an illustration of this.

Will we see other surprises in the men's draw, to the detriment, for example, of Paquito Navarro and Federico Chingotto? Or Juan LeBron and Ale Galan?
