Le Tribunal Arbitral du Sport (TAS) delivered his verdict. The 7 suspension months imposed by the FIP to the Portuguese Federation of Padel is deemed legitimate, and at the same time confirmed.

“A serious violation of the statutes”

The violation of the FIP statutes concerns the organization of the European Championships in 2019 with the FEPA. Alfredo Garbisu, at that time president of the Spanish Federation of Padel (EFF), explained to us a few months ago his version of the facts in an exclusive interview.

The CAS - based in Switzerland - was not sensitive to this version, and considers that “The Portuguese Federation of Padel (FPP) insisted on the organization of the European Championships, (…) knowing that it was acting against the interests of the FIP. ”

Despite two warnings from the FIP, the FPP decided to continue in this organization with public financial support: Instituto Português do Desporto e da Juventude (50 euros), and the City of Lisbon (000 euros).

“A public entity must never ignore the warning of an international federation”, Lucio Correia, a specialist in sports law, believes that public entities should not have ignored these warnings, and that “The suspension of the Portuguese federation by the international federation calls into question the sporting public utility.”

Federal war

Beaten by Luigi Carraro in the elections of the FIP in November 2018, Ricardo Oliveira declared in “Publico” a year and a half ago: “Carraro is an absolute dictator, who joined a 'gang' made up of 5 South Americans”.

“Ricardo Oliveira had said to Luigi Carraro“ no problem, if you want we do the Euro in Italy ”, but after a few months Luigi cut off communication, and we had to reorganize.”, Alfredo Garbisu points out in the interview for Padel Magazine.

For its part, the FIP charges Olive tree to have been disappointed to have lost the elections, and to have “Set up a series of initiatives aimed at undermining the organization”.

All these wars hurt the padel. Let us Fernando Belasteguin conclude this article:

« If these people want to work to grow the padel, we must put the egos aside, all sit down at the same table. Let no one seek to be the one to be applauded, let egos be put aside, and let all pull together in the same direction.

Even with the disaster of bickering, the padel continues to grow. Imagine if all these people got together. It would be amazing if they came together, and we could all work in the same direction. We can do great things. I hope this moment will come very soon. »
