The world championships padel 2020 scheduled for the end of November will be postponed. The most important event of the year for many players and for nations will have to wait.

La decision was difficult to take but inevitable for the International Federation of Padel (FIP) which is already projected in 2021.

COVID-19 still too present

Unfortunately, it must be recognized that the emergency scenario linked to COVID-19 is not over yet in the territories of many members affiliated to the International Federation of Padel. Certainly, some countries are the path towards a return to normality, but this is far from the case for everyone.

Traveling from country to country, both in terms of pure transport and related requirements (issuance of visas, quarantine, checks, etc.) is further complicated (in some cases even banned) and the news from different countries of the world are still not encouraging for the short / medium term.

New dates in Qatar

global padel 2021

Having considered the above, the board - following the path borrowed by other international sports institutions (i.e. IOC, UEFA, ITF) - decided to postpone the World Championships for 2021. The Qatari Federation has confirmed its availability to host the event and is awaiting our decisions regarding the new dates.

This is heartbreaking, because it means we will be deprived of FIP's most important event of 2020 and will have to wait a while for highlight the beauty of our sport and take another step towards the popularity that the Padel merit all over the world.

However, the FIP Board of Directors and Sports Department believe that postponement is the best solution to ensure a successful World Championship: all national federations will be able to restart their local competitions and properly train their national teams for the World Championship. world.

In addition, we are confident that in 2021 we will be able to stage all the events planned for the 2020-2021 biennium.

World as soon as possible

Regarding the new date of the event (and the qualifying phases), we would like to organize theThe World Championships as soon as possible, and that would be great news for our whole family.

“However, the pillars of the next world championships will be safety and participation: they will prevail”, explain the FIP.

Therefore, the International Federation of Padel will continue to monitor the situation and provide more information in due course.

Could we see more postponements if the health crisis continued? YES.

The Olympics in Japan worried

The Tokyo Olympics had already been postponed a first time from July 23, 2021 to August 8, 2021

However, the member of the organizing committee, Haruyuki Takahashi, could consider a new postponement… After the summer.

When it comes to a local or regional event, that's one thing. When it comes to an international event, it's something else. And just because countries are on the right track does not mean that everyone is.

Gold for Haruyuki Takahashi, it is out of the question that countries will be forgotten. If the crisis is not globally under control, both in terms of health and economics, the member of the board of directors of the therefore does not rule out a new postponement of the Olympics in Japan in 2021.

Bad news for the world padel... Especially since the European Championships of Padel scheduled for 2021 could then telescope with the new date of the world. Unfortunately, this saga does not seem to be over yet.
