Under the blazing sun of Alicante and on the court number 1 of the club of La Nucia, the French faced the experienced Spaniards for the European Championships of padel Seniors +. A final dreamed of for more than a year, which was the number 1 objective of the team.

And a magnificent silver medal for the French team!

Sorel / Lambregts: the evil of “puntos de oro”

After a beautiful Marseille, the French began the meeting with the first match, opposing the usual pair Géraldine Sorel and Emmelien Lambregts to the formidable Barbara Alcantara and Lucia Iborra. Our French women got off to a decent start, but three puntos de oro gave Spain an early lead. The first set ended 6-2 in favor of Spain. Cursed puntos de oro!

Despite the search for new tactical solutions and remarkable resistance from our French players, the Spaniards maintained their lead throughout the match. They eventually won the second set 6-2, sealing the first point for Spain.

In the second match, captain Amélie Détrivière played alongside Julie Pecastaing against Nuria Montero and Nuria Rivas. The French tried to impose themselves in power during the first set, but the exceptional hand of the two Spanish players allowed them to counter the attacks without great difficulty. The first set ended 6-3 in favor of Spain.

The ascent… in vain

Subsequently, the French changed their tactics and placed the ball much better, varying the zones and playing more calmly. Although they were down 3-1, we felt the game reverse. More in legs than the Spaniards and more catchy, they managed to come back tied, 3 everywhere. The discussions were long and intense. The score was 4-4, then 5-5 after breaks and unbreaks. At 6-5, Spain had a match point on a punto de oro… brilliantly saved!

The tie-break saw the Spaniards take the lead with a score of 4-1, then 5-3. However, Amélie and Julie continued to believe in it in the face of more feverish Spaniards. The comeback was on, and our French women concluded this tie-break with a score of 7-5 by winning the last 4 points.

The hope was there, but the organisms were affected. At the start of the third set, Amélie and Julie were a little less ahead and quickly found themselves trailing 3-0. The Spaniards changed their strategy again by being slightly more aggressive. They concluded this last set, this match and the meeting with the score of 6-2, after a little more than 2 hours of suspense. Julie and Captain Amélie can be proud of their performance.
