WPT Amsterdam Open – In pain, Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez return to the final

It's been a long time since these two teams met. It must be said that since tournament in Tampere, Finland, Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez had fallen into a very negative spiral. A defeat in the first round at Roland Garros destabilized the Spanish-Argentinian pair at the end of the season. Opposite, we found the metronomes Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega, regulars of the semi-finals. Eleven tournaments played together, eleven semi-finals, few teams can claim better.

We therefore began this second women's semi-final of the day with a meeting which proved interesting as the two teams did not experience the same end of the season. Between one team in impressive form and the other in full doubt, this match could only promise a great show.

The Bea Gonzalez show

If the four protagonists of this meeting play well in their game, there is only one player who stands out: Bea Gonzalez et his new style. She, who we felt so shy during the Madrid Masters, was literally flying on the Amsterdam track. Surprising in all aspects of the game, Bea Gonzalez was absolutely everywhere. His formidable smash, helped by the playing conditions in the Netherlands, and his bajadas overpowering left his opponents no chance.

On the other hand, far from having a bad match, Marta and Gemma are getting annoyed. Whether in gestures or on faces, we sense a lot of frustration among the world number two. Gemma is put in the fridge on almost all points and cannot help her partner, completely cornered under the blows of Brea and Gonzalez.

There was no real opposition in this first round, led head and shoulders by the Argentine pair. In 45 minutes of play, the number three seed of this Amsterdam Open delivers a 6/1 to Triay/Ortega.

Marta, Gemma and the change of tactics

The superbibas relax a little at the start of the second round and are broken from the start. Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega, as focused as ever, took advantage of a few strikes that were a little too “nice” to take the lead. Except that Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez had no intention of letting them slip away. The Spanish-Argentinian pair immediately returned to the score and took the lead in this second set: 2-1.

On the Ortega/Triay side, we are trying to change strategy. Gemma Triay moves much closer to the middle line, to come and help her partner. It remains very complicated despite everything for Gemma who is obliged to come and play behind Marta in the hope of hitting a few balls. This does not seem to hit the mark, the world number two concede another break in this meeting and are left behind: 3-1.

The debates are balanced between the two teams. Triay/Ortega manages to come back and even take the advantage by breaking a second time in this round. Rodrigo Ovide's tactics seem to be bearing fruit. THE superbibas do not panic and, in a new, well-negotiated game, they once again come back to score. 4-4.

The players really struggled to keep their commitments in this second set and there were numerous opportunities to break. Finally, Marta Ortega will win the most important game of this second round, after having erased two break points in the process. Everything has to be done again in this match for Delfi and Bea and hope is reborn for Gemma and Marta. Final score: 7/5.

Brea/Gonzalez, at the end of the suspense

Whether for one team or the other, the hardest part remains to be done in this match. If Gemma and Marta managed to raise their level of play, Bea Gonzalez, for her part, lost her brilliance. Like the end of the second act, the two pairs have great difficulty maintaining their service game. Brea/Gonzalez breaks first, before being caught immediately by the valiant Triay and Ortega.

Ultimately, it's perhaps the one we talked about the least who played the best in this third set: Delfi Brea. Impressively consistent, she pulls off exceptional defensive moves, sickening her opponents. Exceptional backhand defenses, prodigious volleys, and even winning points, it will offer its full range of play.

No one could have given winners before the end of the meeting. It took almost three hours of play and countless twists and turns for Delfi Brea and Bea Gonzalez to emerge from this rally match by winning the third set. 6/4.
