Fernando Belasteguin (#5 WPT; #3 FIP) and Sanyo Gutiérrez (#3 WPT; #11 FIP) decided to get back together in 2023 after sharing the track for the entire first half of the 2021 season.

Bela / Sanyo 2.0

Two years ago, Belasteguin and Gutiérrez pleased a whole bunch of fans who had dreamed of seeing them associated for years. These two legendary players would quickly honor their status by winning three titles in the first part of the season. Before, as Sanyo explained to us, that an injury to Bela disrupts the mechanics of the pair. A little to everyone's surprise, the two men decided to separate. A rather intelligent decision in the end, judging by the results obtained by the Coello/Belasteguin and Tapia/Gutiérrez duos over the past 18 months.

But lo and behold, the two long-toothed youngsters Coello and Tapia have chosen to team up this season, leaving the two veterans without a partner. Did they therefore as our colleague Emilio Forcher wonders, united because they had no other alternative?

At first, we would be tempted to moderate these remarks. Indeed, the Argentinians are still part of the gratin of the padel world and we imagine that they have necessarily had proposals from other excellent players, including certainly young rising stars. If these two outstanding competitors have chosen to get back together it is because they think they are capable of doing better than the first time. Something Sanyo told us in his interview a few weeks ago.

Avoid the other three highest ranked pairs

Moreover, in Dubai, the two men were very strong to offer the decisive point and the title to their country against Momo Gonzalez and Alex Ruiz. They seemed to take advantage in the 20×10, and showed a nice complementarity both on and off the track.

We therefore say to ourselves that if these two men who have won everything in their life as professional players wanted to reunite in 2023, it is because deep down they are convinced that they can use their experience to fight against n' anyone. In addition, they must want to offer another public image than this somewhat disappointing end of September 2021, marked by a defeat in the quarter-finals of the WPT Lugo Open against Gonzalez / Rico.

However, it should not be overlooked that by teaming up, the 2022 World Champions avoid facing a pair of the Top 4 before the semi-finals of each WPT tournament, a fact which inevitably weighed in the balance at one time or another...

So it's up to you to tell us: did Bela and Sanyo join forces by default or because they really wanted to share the track together this season?
