The French Tennis Federation (FFT) has announced a significant evolution in the categories of padel leisure, namely P25, P100 and P250. These changes aim to protect these categories and reserve them mainly for beginners or recreational players.

Restrictions by category

  • In P25 :
    • Ladies: Top 1000 prohibited.
    • Gentlemen: Top 10.000 prohibited.
  • In P100 :
    • Ladies: Top 300 prohibited.
    • Gentlemen: Top 2000 prohibited.
  • In P250 :
    • Ladies: Top 100 prohibited.
    • Gentlemen: Top 500 prohibited.

Objectives of the FFT

The aim of these restrictions is to avoid the participation of high-level players in these categories aimed at beginners or casual players. These measures aim to guarantee balanced and accessible competition.

Consequences and debates

The absence of prize money in all these categories and these new limitations will probably lead to a wider opening of the tables, particularly notable in the P250 men's category. In recent years, the average level of P250 has already decreased, despite the occasional presence of more capped players.

These reforms give rise to divided opinions: some see it as an improvement, promoting fairness, while others regret the loss of opportunities for less experienced players to compete against better opponents.

As with any reform, there are arguments for and against, but these changes seem to be an assumed response from the FFT to certain abuses observed in “leisure” category tournaments.
