It was after almost three hours of fierce combat that the first Italian medal was won in padel at the 2023 European Games in Krakow, in three sets (7/5, 3/6, 7/5) against Spain.

Chiara Pappacena and Giulia Sussarello managed to turn things around when all seemed lost, when a 4-3 break from the Spaniards in the third set seemed like an insurmountable mountain. However, Noa Cánovas and Araceli Martínez had to face a team that became compact and solid again.

Thus, at 5-3 in favor of Spain, the players led by Marcela Ferrari have chained four games in a row. In the final game, another remarkable point from Pappacena preceded three straight errors from Araceli Martínez to seal the Italian win.

The difference was made on the number of points won on the first serve, largely in favor of Italy with a score of 72 against 52.

“We are extremely happy, the Italian jersey is like a second skin for us. We are still reeling in awe and disbelief at how incredible it felt to have won a medal here at the Games. It was a very tough final and that's why we are all the more proud to have brought a medal to Italy,” said the bronze medalists.
