Sanyo Gutiérrez celebrated his 39th birthday this Thursday with a victory and a qualification for the quarter-finals of the Human Padel Open. In front of a well-stocked Toulouse Sports Palace for the last match of the day, “el mago de San Luis” and his Andalusian partner Momo Gonzalez delivered a two-sided match.

Dominating in the first round against Juanlu Esbri and Edu Alonso, they won 6/3 and seemed to be on their way to qualifying without a hitch. But from the start of the 2nd set, the seeded No. 3 was pushed around by two young players full of passion and ardor on the track.

Esbri and Alonso made a first break very quickly, quickly canceled by a break. But, taking advantage of a drop in spirit from Momo and Sanyo, the two young Spaniards remade the hole and came away 5/2 in this round. The public imagined living a suspenseful third set, but Sanyo obviously did not hear it that way.

He and Gonzalez put on a boost and redid their late break, equalizing at 5/5 in stride and even taking the advantage 6/5. Juanlu and Edu tried hard to snatch a decisive game, but the almost forty-something Argentine decidedly did not want to drag on the track any longer: he and Momo masterfully concluded the game after an incredible and interminable match point, the best point of the day and perhaps of the tournament.

Tonight, it's time to blow out the candles for Sanyo Gutiérrez, but keeping the momentum going to face Ramiro Moyano and Gilberto Gil tomorrow.
