We hear you screaming from here, the world number 1s of this season are Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia. And you are… partially right. In the ranking of World Padel Tour, it is indeed the Spanish-Argentinian pair which is and which will end up in the lead.
But in the current ranking of the International Federation of Padel, nothing is decided yet. And for good reason, if Arturo Coello is alone in the lead with 12.910 point, Juan LeBron and Alejandro Galan are both right behind with 12.200 point. Agustín Tapia is only in sixth place, with 9.730 point.
So what does this mean? That Lebron and Galan can finish the year as a top pair. And start the 2024 season… in first place!
The new classification
Let's recontextualize all of this a little. Next season, the World Padel Tour will have bowed out and Premier Padel will take his place. For the ranking, everything will change too. 24 tournaments will be counted, including 21 corresponding to the best results of the 2022 and 2023 seasons du Premier Padel and the FIP Tour 2023.
Will be added, from September, i.e. the 3 best results of the WPT Master and Open 1000 tournaments 2023 i.e. the 3 best results of the FIP Tour (apart from those already taken into account).
In reality, the 2023 season of Coello and Tapia on the World Padel Tour will only have one meager impact in the calculation of this ranking. And the fact that Agustín Tapia is so far down in the FIP rankings (due to his absence from tournaments Premier Padel during a good part of 2022) could deprive your team to be number 1 at the start of next season.
Arturo Coello, alone in the lead
The strong man in the FIP ranking is Arturo Coello. Alone in the lead with 12.910 points, Arturo is not guaranteed to finish the season in first place in the FIP ranking, but already knows that he will start 2024 in the lead, due to his lead in the three WPT tournaments counted.
Indeed, the current three best results of Coello and Tapia give them 5 points each (victories in Abu Dhabi and Marbella and defeat in the final in Valladolid).
For Lebron and Galan, the World Padel Tour only gives 3 points with the defeat in the final in Abu Dhabi and two Open 1000 victories recorded.
The Barcelona Master Final will offer 1 500 points to the winners, which means that Coello and Tapia can still gain 300 points, when their rivals can take 500.
We then understand that even if Coello is certain to start 2024 in the lead, due to the 2 points lead he has over Lebron and Galan in the new ranking, the Spaniards can still finish ahead of the Coello / Tapia pair and start 910 as the first pair, if they continue together obviously... You have understood, the last two tournaments promise to be hot!
It was her brother who one day told her to accompany him to a padel court, since then, Gwenaëlle has never left the court. Except when it comes to going to watch the retransmission of Padel Magazine, World Padel Tour… or Premier Padel…or the French Championships. In short, she is a fan of this sport.
