It is tonight that the verdict will fall in the women's group D, after the meetings Sweden - Brazil and France - United Arab Emirates.

We pulled out our calculators and imagined three scenarios to find out which teams will finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in this very homogeneous group. And the very good news is that France is in control of its destiny: it cannot finish 3rd if it wins its three matches. We will therefore assume that France will win 3/0 against the United Arab Emirates, a very weak team which has scored only one game in three games so far.

From there, we can imagine three scenarios:

► Scenario 1: no fault of Sweden

This is the simplest case. If Sweden commits a clear round and beats Brazil 3/0 or 2/1, they are guaranteed first place. France then finished 2e and Brazil 3e.

► Scenario 2: Sweden loses 3/0

If Brazil beat Sweden 3/0, all three teams will have won the same number of matches. To decide between them, it will then be necessary to count the number of matches won.

Number of victories: France: 9 / Sweden: 8 / Brazil: 10

In this scenario, it is therefore Sweden which is eliminated and Brazil which draws the jackpot, ahead of France.

► Scenario 3: Sweden loses 2/1

If Brazil beat Sweden 2-1, all three teams will have won the same number of games… and the same number of games. To decide between them, it will then be necessary to count the number of sets won (and lost), or even that of games.

Number of victories : France: 9 / Sweden: 9 / Brazil: 9

Count between sets won and sets lost (after three meetings):

  • France: 13 – 6 = 7
  • Sweden: 16 – 3 = 13
  • Brazil: 14 – 4 = 10

If the 4e meeting is won 2/1 by the Brazil, the latter will have a total of sets won of 18 or 19; he will have lost between 6 and 8. That is one balance of sets between 10 and 13.

La Sweden will also have a total of sets won between 18 and 20; and a total of lost sets of 7 or 8. Either a balance of sets between 10 and 13.

In case of equality of the balance of sets, it will then be necessary to count the games to decide between Brazil and Sweden. [Editor's note: it finally turned out that the rule adopted by the FIP to decide between the 2nd and 3rd is that of the direct confrontation between the two teams]

As for France, if they win 3/0 against the UAE, they will total 19 sets won and 6 sets lost. This balance of 13 sets would potentially allow him to finish 1st in group D, in particular thanks to the set won by Fiona Ligi and Mélissa Martin against Sweden. Cock-a-doodle Doo !!!
