Coki Nieto is an atypical player. Indeed, despite a relative lack of power, he excels on the left due to his technical quality and motor skills. Padel Magazine meet the Spanish champion in Monterrey to get to know him better.

Le padel it's expensive

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: For people who don't know your story, tell us how you started playing padel.

Coki Nieto: “I was playing in a club near my house, because my father was playing tournaments. I was the classic heavy child who entered the field as soon as he had five minutes to play against the glass. It is true that I have always played padel and that made things easier. I started very late to take lessons in padel, at 13 or 14 years old. I was able to get a scholarship from the Damm foundation which allowed me to finance myself : whether we like it or not, to play padel costs money. The price of the racket, travel to participate in tournaments…”

I know my strengths

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: And now you're a pro and you play with Di Nenno! How did you feel with this player?

Coki Nieto: “When he called me I didn't doubt for a second. It was a great opportunity for me. It is true that we could have won more matches in three sets, but the level of play is there. I think I can help him a bit more, but the chemistry is good on and off the court.

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: You are a player on the left neither powerful nor tall. What are your strengths to play in this position?

Coki Nieto: “I am a player whose strong point is defense. I am an atypical player, but I know what I have. I'm not going to attempt a smash from behind the line. I'm quick in transition, I have good volleys. I make the most of what I have and that's what allows me to win games.

Coki Nieto: "I have a project but we won't announce it at this time."

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: Give me a clue, is he Spanish?

Coki Nieto: “He's not Spanish… with that, I've already told you everything!”

Lorenzo Lecci Lopez: Is this Major in Mexico at the level of Roland-Garros, Roma Major or Doha?

Coki Nieto: "Yes, I think there is bad luck with the rain, but if we talk about the infrastructure it is excellent. Everything is done to make everything perfect, and it is undoubtedly up to the other Majors of the season. All tracks are very good.
