La Sweden will not be traveling to Dubai. A year after boycotting the Doha World Cup, the Swedish men's team did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Terrible disappointment for Sweden, which lost 3/0 to Portugal.

Portugal, one foot in Dubai

The majority of Portuguese players already have great international experience. And it was seen during these qualifying matches for the worlds in Dubai.

Even if Daniel Windhal was probably the best player in this confrontation, the Swedish team is too heterogeneous, and it is very difficult to beat a complete team like the Portuguese.

The Swedes secretly hoped to have partly caught up with nations like Portugal. But this defeat does not suffer from any ambiguity: Sweden remains behind nations like France or Portugal.

Jonas Björkman, the former Swedish tennis champion and currently captain of this men's team, could not do much. For the competitor that he is, it's a disappointment.

We can even say that he did the job. He dared to break the pair Daniel Windahl and Simon Vasquez, the two stars of this Swedish team. It was probably the only way to hope for a final victory against Portugal. But the step was too high.

International disappointment for Sweden

It was the Swedish number one who started the ball rolling with young Albin Olsson against Vasco Pascoal and Pedro Aurajo. A completely crazy match, a match that Sweden absolutely had to win because they had no room for maneuver behind. It was finally the Portuguese who won 7/6 in the 3rd set. The players know it, in one camp as in the other, Portugal can no longer lose.

Albin Olsson collapses, Daniel Windhal throws his racket into the net, to the cries of the exultant Portuguese. The latter know it, even if it is only the first qualifying match, they have done the hardest part.

The second meeting between Simon Vasquez / Anton Andersson and Miguel Oliveira / Pedro Perry is largely dominated by the Portuguese pair: 6-2, 6-0.

End of hope. Sweden will therefore not even pass the group stages and will have to go back through the “qualifications” box at the next world championships.
