The Vigo Open from World Padel Tour which ended this Sunday gave us an exceptional show, with confirmations, but also big surprises!

Tops

In the men

On the male side, as in Alicante, we find young people Miguel Semmler and Javi Leal, which follow the performances, with a record this week: 8 matches won in the same tournament ! When will they stop?

They are obviously in the Top, Sanyo Gutierrez and Fernando Belasteguin win their second tournament since the start of the season. Veterans are showing anyone who doubted them that they were wrong!

How not to mention Paquito Navarro and Martin Di Nenno, who after having negotiated the eighths and quarters brilliantly, created the big sensation of the tournament by eliminating Lebron and Galan. Not far in the final, they should arrive in Santander with full confidence!

Behind, difficult to find a pair that really stands out as the level seems to have tightened on the WPT. We will retain Maxi Sanchez and Lucho Capra, who made it to the quarter-finals, where they took a set from Bela Sanyo; and Ramiro Moyano / José Rico, also quarter-finalists, with a clear victory over Ruiz / Botello. Finally, a little word for Benjamin Tison and Teo Zapata which entered the table starting from the preprevias! A first for a French !

In the ladies

On the feminine side, the sensation of the week is none other than the pair Riera / Llaguno, who beat all odds and ended up winning the tournament. Victories in particular against Sainz / Gonzalez and Salazar / Triay which will be remembered.

We will also mention those they beat in the semi-finals, Aranzazu Osoro and Victoria Iglesias, who achieved the feat of leaving Paula Josemaria and Ariana Sanchez in the round of XNUMX, and in straight sets please! Argentina and Spain continue their excellent momentum.

Another Spanish-Argentinian pair caught our attention, it is the one composed by Delfi Brea and Tamara Icardo. Second semi-final for them in 2021, with a victory against Marta Ortega and Marta Marrero as a bonus!

A bit like Sanchez / Capra for the gentlemen, Eli Amatriain and Sofia Araujo have regained some confidence with two games won. Finally, we will not forget Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar, who, if they ended up cracking in the final, achieved a very high level tournament !

 The Flops

In the men

We think first of course to Federico Chingotto and Juan Tello. The Argentines disappointed with this 3/6 4/6 loss in the round of XNUMX against Nieto / Diaz. Among the favorite pairs before the start of the season, they are finally having more trouble than expected.

Sparkling in the first two tournaments, Miguel Lamperti and Arturo Coello got off the road prematurely, with an expeditious defeat against Uri Botello and Javi Ruiz: 6/2 6/3! Not spoiled in the draw, however, we could not imagine being beaten on such a score.

Miguel Lamperti backhand disappointment vigo open

Mati Diaz and Agustin Silingo have had a very complicated start to the season. The number 8 seed, who had shown great things at the end of 2020, suffered the law of young Semmler and Leal from the round of 2021. Mati and Agus have so far not done better than eighth in XNUMX, proof of the current level on the WPT ...

Finally, a little tour through the previas, where Aday Santana and Cristian Gutierrez suffered a third defeat without a victory in 2021. Defeated by Tison / Zapata, the veterans seem somewhat overwhelmed by the current pace on the World Padel Tour.

In the ladies

The first pair that comes to mind is of course Josemaria / Sanchez. Sacred in Madrid and finalists in Alicante, Ari and Paula arrived in Vigo pumped up. But that wasn't enough against an Iglesias / Osoro pair on a cloud that handed them a straight-set loss. Those who were number 1 in the Race last Monday will want to prove to Santander that this elimination is just a mishap.

Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez WPT Padel Alicante final

The pair Navarro/Reiter once again enters the box of flops. The number 8 seed, eliminated by Collombon / Castello, has still not won a match in 2021. It is starting to get worrying ...

Finally, not really another flop in the women's table, but two pairs which are not yet evolving at their best. We think of course of Marta Ortega and Marta Marrero, who had come together at the end of last season to try to recover their throne and who have not yet done better than elimination in the quarterfinals. Bea Gonzalez and Lucia Sainz they were also ruled out in the quarter-finals in Vigo, against the future champions. If the result is not dramatic in itself, it is more the way that questions with this 6/0 6/4 that nobody had seen coming!
